The pedal adds sustain to the notes, which can create a richer sound on a piano, but it's not necessary for learning the basics. The thumb typically plays the root note or the lowest note of the chord, the middle finger presses down on one of the middle notes, and the pinky stretches to play the highest note of the chord.
